Dance for the Cure Wins 1st Place at Hillsborough Scarecrow Contest

Mayor Robert Britting Jr, DFC Co-founder Kathleen Cirioli, Janet Winters

In an exciting October event, Dance for the Cure (DFC) was awarded the top prize at the Hillsborough Scarecrow Contest, taking home the 1st Place Overall Winner title for our “Blossoms of Hope” scarecrow. The creative and symbolic entry was crafted by DFC volunteer Janet Fredericks, who poured her heart into the piece to reflect the spirit of hope, resilience, and the transformative power of community support that defines DFC's mission.

The scarecrows, including DFC’s winning display, adorned the Hillsborough Township Municipal Building throughout October, drawing visitors from all over the region. Erica Lenzo, Deputy Clerk and festival organizer, shared her passion for infusing arts into the community, marking this contest as a cherished tradition she began four years ago. With her idea to bring creativity and togetherness to Hillsborough, Erica has built a community-wide event that celebrates artistry and friendly competition among businesses, organizations, and residents.

The awards ceremony was an uplifting moment for all participants. Mayor Robert Britting Jr. presented the first-place trophy and a certificate of recognition to Dance for the Cure, highlighting the importance of community support and acknowledging the impact DFC has made locally. In addition to the grand prize, seven honorable mentions and nine other winners in various categories (Business, Residential, and Organizations) were celebrated for their originality and effort. This recognition shows how art can serve as a powerful reminder of the causes we champion.

For Dance for the Cure, the event represents another step in spreading awareness and rallying support for local breast cancer patients facing financial hardship. As a 100% volunteer organization, DFC relies on community support to fund critical aid for those navigating the challenges of breast cancer. The trophy is a wonderful token of achievement, but the true prize is in the awareness and compassion our scarecrow inspires.
